The kid's karate class made our local paper! My oldest was interviewed, but they spelled her name wrong. That's ok, I know who she is!
YMCA Offers Karate, Kettlebell
I am a sometimes runner with plans to make that a regularly scheduled program. I have an orange belt in Karate and I like swinging kettlebells. As a mom with a post-baby body, I am trying my best to get in shape, lose weight, and be healthy. I want to be strong!

Hanging in there
Still a lot of sickness going around my house and so far I have managed to avoid it. Doesn't give me much time to work out at home, but that's ok.
On Monday, I lifted 10,490 lbs! Sounds pretty cool, doesn't it? Anyway, that's what it said when I logged my workout online. Here's what I did:
140 snatches - 12kg bell
40 presses - two 10kg bells
30 squats - two 10kg bells
50 swings - two 10kg bells
10 push presses - two 12kg bells
10 double jerks - two 12kg bells
And an hour of karate afterward. We didn't make it to karate that night due to our own Germ Fest 2013. No class today because it's old people day at the Y, but the kids will hopefully make it to karate tonight. Making up my classes tomorrow!

Busy as a Bee!
After last week's "issues", we did in fact make it through the weekend unscathed. However on Monday, a whole new round of medical drama ensued and has kept all of us pretty stressed and bury. Fortunately, it's no one in our household, but it's still a close family member. Lots of traveling going on and probably some long term changes, for the patient and for us as well.
Despite everything going on, I still managed to get to class on Monday and today. My shoulders were a little sore after Monday, but I did push myself pretty hard. I guess I will see if I am sore tomorrow too. Two and a half weeks to go until Rest/PR week! I am excited to see how I have progressed since last time!
Monday's Workout
140 snatches - 12kg bell (this is where I pushed myself, did only 100 last week)
15 presses - two 10kg bells
15 squats - two 10kg bells
25 swings - two 10kg bells
10 push presses - two 12kg bells
10 double jerks - two 12kg bells
30 pullovers - 18lb bell
Wednesday's Workout
55 squats - 24kg bell (equivalent to 53lbs)
9 cleans - two 10kg bells
9 presses - two 10kg bells
9 squats - two 10kg bells
9 swings - two 10kg bells
9 (snatch + overhead squat) - two 10kg bells
3 TGUs, 6 snatches, 6 windmills - 12kg bell
Funny story about the overhead squats today. It's a double snatch, squat, rack the bells, and repeat. One my second set of three, when I stood up out of the squat, my sweaty feet started to slide out from under me! Luckily, I was able to catch myself. I don't think doing an accidental split with a total of 44lbs over my head would be very fun! So for future reference, do the overhead squats on a yoga mat or wear my minimalist shoes!
Keep in mind that I do an hour of karate immediately following kettlebell class and another hour of karate in the evenings helping in the kids class. I refer to Mondays and Wednesdays as my sleepy days because it takes a lot out of me. I do love it though! And watch the Mansfield News Journal over the next few days, they are doing a story on the karate and ketllebell classes! I will post a link to the actual story once it's published.
Also, I went to the Y early today, fully intending to run before class. It's didn't happen. Iended helping another classmate who also arrived early with a few things and then ran into an old friend I haven't seen in months, so we chatted for a bit. I will get back to it though!

Yup. I know.
I'm a total slacker. So let's recap the past year, shall we?
*I lost approximately 20lbs between January and June. Woohoo!
*In May, I face-planted in the road on a run and sprained my ankle pretty bad.
*Later that month, I lost my running partner.
*Started slacking on my running.....
*Dealt with some pretty serious depression during the spring and summer.
*Picked up a Karate class at the end of June! Loving it!
*Still slacking on my running.
*In the early fall, I picked up a Kettlebell class in addition to Karate. Loving it too!
*Last week I found a new running partner! Back to running!
Karate and Kettlebells have done more for me both physically and mentally than anything else I have tried. Between January and June, I was working out 2-3 hours a day, 5 days a week. The last few months, I have been working out 2 hours a day, 2 days a week. I now have muscle tone, I have maintained the weight loss, and I feel stronger and more confident. People tell me I look like I have slimmed down quite a bit the last few months, and though I am not losing that in weight, I am in inches.
I have my yellow belt in Karate and am very close to getting my orange belt. I have also began helping with the kids' Karate class in the evenings.
My new running partner I met through Kettlebell class. We both wanted to do a little more, so it's back to a 5k running program! We are doing the 5k 101 if you are interested. We meet before Kettlebell class to run 2 days a week and meet on a third day during the week to run and do extra kettlebells on our own.
I can't put all this out there without mentioning the awesome people I have met through these classes. They have become great friends and I enjoy working out and hanging out with them!
I am hoping to start 2013 continuing to grow stronger both mentally and physically, get back into running full force (so much easier with a friend!), and building my self-esteem.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A!
We joined the local YMCA the other day. A good friend of mine begged me to join so we could go together. However, by the time I joined, it was only another $20 a month for Shaun to join. And then, by the time we paid that, it was only another $10 to add all three kids. So we just did it. Funny how that works!
So later that night, I met up with K (same friend that just cost me an arm and a leg) and we "worked out" together. Started on the treadmill (feels like forever since I have ran) and I made her run a whole mile straight at a 12 minute pace. It about killed her, but she did it. And I was secretly happy that I barely broke a sweat!
Next was the stair machine, which wasn't bad. Then K wanted to do some ab work. Which, after having 3 kids, kills me. But I did it (and am paying for it 48 hours later). I think we may try to meet up a few days a week and do this.
There is a yoga class I may sign up for with Caitlin. Some "grown up" girl time. And K and I may attempt a Zumba class and make fools out of ourselves. Neither of us is very coordinated.
All in all though, I think this will be good for us. I need to get back into my running (their treadmills are better than mine and with the cold weather around, that's good) and I definitely need to lose weight. So here's to 2012, weight loss and running!
