Approaching Swimsuit Season with Caution

I am hoping to lose more weight before our annual trip to the beach. I have 17lbs to go to hit weight goal #1. Ever since the flu came to visit our house, I haven't had much of an appetite. I blame the massive amounts of vomit I had to clean up. Because of the lack of appetite, I have been really careful with what and how much I eat. Some days it's a little harder than others. I admit I am a comfort/boredom eater. I have been trying to ask myself whether I am actually hungry when I want to snack or eat a second helping.

The other day, I tried on a swimsuit for the beach. Even though I weigh the same as last year's trip, I was able to go down a size in my bottoms because I have lost inches. And have I mentioned my jeans are looser? I find that I keep having to pull them up. I don't think it's time to size down in that department quite yet though. Maybe by next winter.

I would like to be at weight goal #1 by the end of this year, I am ok with not being there by summer time. I worry that if I lose it too quickly, it will just come back. I want to concentrate on changing my eating habits, continue with kettlebells, karate, and running, and I figure the pounds will drop on their own.

Weight Loss

I did gain a couple pounds, not during the holidays, but after. It may be muscle gain, but I'm not sure. So I am back to being extra careful with what I eat (and snack on) during the day. And I have already lost those couple pounds. A little less than 20 to go to reach weight goal number 1.

Smoothies are my new best friend. My typical breakfast consists of a banana, some frozen fruit, plain greek yogurt, 2 tbsp of PB2, and 1 tbsp of ground flax seed all thrown in a blender and blended. I may add some almond milk if it's too think.

Lunch sometimes is another smoothie with half an avocado instead of a banana and also a handful of spinach. That may sound nasty, but even Shaun loves them and he hates avocados. On other days, I may have sushi or Shaun and I might go out to lunch. Or just plain leftovers from the night before.

I plan dinners a week or two in advance. Last night was pasta with italian sausage, sun dried tomatoes, and broccoli. Throw in some sauteed onions and garlic and white wine, and we have ourselves a meal that everyone likes! I always try to have veggies and protein, but some nights it doesn't happen. And I am ok with that. My biggest difficulty is finding meals that at least 4 out of 5 of us like!

Busy day!

55 squats today with a 24kg bell. I bumped it up a bit. It wasn't as hard as I thought.

Then a 3x3 (3 sets of 3 reps each) of double cleans, presses, squats, and swings. I used two 10kg bells for cleans and presses and the 24kg bell for squats and swings. Note to self: Use heavier bell for swings! I got a little over enthusiastic with that!

On to a 3x3 with a double snatch and overhead squat. Again, I used a 10kg bell for this.

I didn't get to my TGUs today, hopefully I can do that tomorrow. Instead, I did 3 sets of 10 pullovers. I think my stomach muscles will be unhappy with me tomorrow!

After kettlebells and karate, I rushed home, showered, ate a quick lunch, and got ready to meet a friend for coffee. Then off to the store and picking up the rugrats from school. Then I get to make dinner and do another round of karate tonight when I help with the kids' class. And hopefully after the post-karate chaos of showers and bedtime, I can relax!

On a pretty awesome note, I hadn't seen my friend for a couple months and the first thing she said was how good I looked and had I lost weight? Actually, I have gained a tiny bit, but I am pretty sure it's muscle. It made me feel pretty good!

Yup. I know.

I'm a total slacker. So let's recap the past year, shall we?

*I lost approximately 20lbs between January and June. Woohoo!

*In May, I face-planted in the road on a run and sprained my ankle pretty bad.

*Later that month, I lost my running partner.

*Started slacking on my running.....

*Dealt with some pretty serious depression during the spring and summer.

*Picked up a Karate class at the end of June! Loving it!

*Still slacking on my running.

*In the early fall, I picked up a Kettlebell class in addition to Karate. Loving it too!

*Last week I found a new running partner! Back to running!

Karate and Kettlebells have done more for me both physically and mentally than anything else I have tried. Between January and June, I was working out 2-3 hours a day, 5 days a week. The last few months, I have been working out 2 hours a day, 2 days a week. I now have muscle tone, I have maintained the weight loss, and I feel stronger and more confident. People tell me I look like I have slimmed down quite a bit the last few months, and though I am not losing that in weight, I am in inches.

I have my yellow belt in Karate and am very close to getting my orange belt. I have also began helping with the kids' Karate class in the evenings.

My new running partner I met through Kettlebell class. We both wanted to do a little more, so it's back to a 5k running program! We are doing the 5k 101 if you are interested. We meet before Kettlebell class to run 2 days a week and meet on a third day during the week to run and do extra kettlebells on our own.

I can't put all this out there without mentioning the awesome people I have met through these classes. They have become great friends and I enjoy working out and hanging out with them!

I am hoping to start 2013 continuing to grow stronger both mentally and physically, get back into running full force (so much easier with a friend!), and building my self-esteem.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A!

We joined the local YMCA the other day. A good friend of mine begged me to join so we could go together. However, by the time I joined, it was only another $20 a month for Shaun to join. And then, by the time we paid that, it was only another $10 to add all three kids. So we just did it. Funny how that works!

So later that night, I met up with K (same friend that just cost me an arm and a leg) and we "worked out" together. Started on the treadmill (feels like forever since I have ran) and I made her run a whole mile straight at a 12 minute pace. It about killed her, but she did it. And I was secretly happy that I barely broke a sweat!

Next was the stair machine, which wasn't bad. Then K wanted to do some ab work. Which, after having 3 kids, kills me. But I did it (and am paying for it 48 hours later). I think we may try to meet up a few days a week and do this.

There is a yoga class I may sign up for with Caitlin. Some "grown up" girl time. And K and I may attempt a Zumba class and make fools out of ourselves. Neither of us is very coordinated.

All in all though, I think this will be good for us. I need to get back into my running (their treadmills are better than mine and with the cold weather around, that's good) and I definitely need to lose weight. So here's to 2012, weight loss and running!

Weight

You would think that after nearly 2 years of running, I would have lost at least some weight. But no. I have managed to lose the extra I have gained, from a 2 week vacation at the beach and 2 weeks off from running due to injury. But my body seems to want to stay exactly at my current weight.

I would like to lose 30 pounds. That would put me within (the upper) range of weight for my height. I don't diet well, I admit. But I do try to watch what I eat. It's unfortunate that I like to cook, especially bake. However, I give a lot of that away.

I currently run between 6 and 10 miles a week. I hope to increase that in the near future. People tell me I am building muscle and that's why I'm not losing. I might have believed that the first 6 months, but not at this point. I realize I am doing other positive things for my body, like building up my cardiovascular systems. But I admit, this is kind of bumming me out.
